At least seven children were killed after a bus fell into a pond next to a road in southern Bangladesh, police said today, according to dpa. Three children died on the scene of the accident, while four others succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital in Jessore district, some 150 kilometers southwest of Dhaka, police officer Motiur Rahman said. The victims were aged between six and 11. Local residents were able to rescue about 40 children from the site, with the minors subsequently receiving treatment in hospital. The bus, which was carrying pupils from a local primary school, veered off the road when its driver tried to circumvent a truck, Rahman said quoting a witness. The children were returning home from annual picnic organized by the school.
