A speeding bus packed with passengers collided head on with a truck in northern Bangladesh on Friday, leaving at least 11 people dead and 14 others injured, a police official said. The accident occurred in Bogra district, 176 kilometers (100 miles) north of the capital, Dhaka, local police chief Shafikul Islam said. Nine passengers on the bus died instantly while two others succumbed to injuries later, Islam said. The injured were hospitalized. The Associated Press quoted Islam as saying that the death toll could still rise since seven passengers sustained severe injuries. Road accidents are common in Bangladesh, and about 4,000 people die each year in such accidents because of lax traffic rules, reckless driving and poor road conditions.
