Iyad Amin Madani assumed office today as the new Secretary General of the Jeddah-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). In an address at the reception party held by OIC to welcome him and bid farewell to his predecessor, Madani offered thanks to the countries who bestowed their confidence in him to serve as the tenth secretary general of the OIC and also expressed gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for nominating him to the position. Madani vowed to defend the Islamic countries who face political strife tampering their well-being and freedom of their people, work for extending the social outlets among member countries, enlarge cultural and humanitarian exchange among them and eliminate the stereotype picture seen by some of the member states about others.
