A major earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck in the Pacific Ocean just south of Alaska's Aleutian Islands on Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. There were no initial reports of damage, and the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami watch, warning, or advisory in effect. However, the center's Michael Burgy said he was monitoring for potential tsunamis caused by landslides, either on land or under water. The USGS said the earthquake happened about 8:25 a.m. local time at a depth of 34 kilometers, and it was centered about 90 kilometers southeast of Adak, Alaska, which is more than 1,900 kilometers southwest of Anchorage. The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said in a statement that the earthquake was felt strongly in Adak and Atka, and shaking lasted up to one minute.
