The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a significant earthquake near Alaska's remote Aleutian Islands, according to AP. The agency says in a preliminary report that the magnitude-6.1 quake struck the seismically active but sparsely populated island chain at 4:49 a.m. Sunday at a depth of about 39 miles (63 kilometers). It was centered 35 miles (56 kilometers) southwest of Atka and 1,136 miles (1,828 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage. A police dispatcher in the town of St. Paul some 400 miles (640 kilometers) away says he felt no tremors and has heard no reports of damages or injuries. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says a tsunami is not expected.
