An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck off the north-western coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island Wednesday, damaging buildings and leaving one person dead, officials said. About 20 buildings were damaged in Simuelue, a district in Aceh province closest to the epicentre, said Sutopo Nugoroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency. A 65-year-old man fell and died, apparently because of a stroke, as he rushed to get outside his home after the quake, Nugoroho was quoted as saying by DPA. The quake occurred at 7:27 am (0027 GMT) 24 kilometres south-west of Simeulue at a depth of 10 kilometres, said the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency
