MAKKAH – Civil Defense personnel rescued eight workers who were trapped under the debris of a collapsed building under construction in Makkah on Sunday. Six workers were taken to King Abdulaziz Hospital in Zahir while two others were given first aid at the site. Another panic-stricken worker was also given treatment. Col. Saeed Sarhan, spokesman of Civil Defense in Makkah, said the mishap occurred at the building of Makkah traffic department in Umm Al-Joud district on the Old MakkahJeddah Expressway. The accident happened when the scaffolds supporting the roof broke while concrete was being poured on the second floor of the building. Preliminary investigations showed that defective wooden frame and weak iron poles of scaffolding caused the accident. The Civil Defense department has started an investigation into the accident, said Sarhan.
