DOHA — Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail), the company overseeing the construction of the Qatar's integrated railway network, was recently awarded the ISO certification OHSAS 18001:2007 for occupational health and safety management systems, following management systems audits of the Qatar Rail QSHESE department by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance. OHSAS 18001 is Qatar Rail's second accolade from ISO in less than 2 months, as the company received earlier in May ISO 9001:2008 certification for quality management, which specifies requirements for a quality management system where an organization needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. Commenting on the certification, Eng. Hamad Al Bishri, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said: “This is a key milestone for our company as it indicates not only Qatar Rail's commitment towards Health and Safety governance and assurance management, but more importantly a framework for continuous improvement and excellence in delivery. I thank all of the Qatar Rail team and LRQA for their efforts in making this possible.” OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems—Requirements) is an internationally applied Standard for occupational health and safety management systems. It is intended to help organizations to control occupational health and safety risks. It was developed in response to widespread demand for a recognized standard against which to be certified and assessed. It sets a framework to identify and control health and safety risks, reduce the potential for accidents, aid legal compliance and improve overall performance. LRQA is a world leading, independent provider of Business Assurance services including management system certification, validation, verification and a full range of training to international standards and schemes. — SG
