Blue Jays ward off Tigers
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 12 - 08 - 2014

TORONTO — First baseman Jose Bautista singled to right field with the bases loaded and none out in the 19th inning as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Detroit Tigers 6-5 in the American League here Sunday.
Right-hander Rick Porcello (13-7), usually a starter for the Tigers, entered the game in the bottom of the 17th and took the loss.
It was Toronto's longest ever game (six hours and 37 minutes) and the first time they had played 19 innings.
It was the second day in a row that the Blue Jays (63-56) tied the Tigers (63-52) in the ninth and won in extra innings as they took the rubber match of the three-game series.
Red Sox 3, Angels 1: Yoenis Cespedes hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning, giving the Boston Red Sox victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
The day after the Angels beat the Red Sox in 19 innings, Boston got revenge as right-hander Rubby De La Rosa (4-4) earned his first road win of the season.
Angels center fielder Mike Trout hit his 27th home run of the season, matching his season total from last year, in the bottom of the eighth off Edward Mujica.
Twins 6, Athletics 1: Right-hander Phil Hughes pitched seven strong innings and the Minnesota Twins beat Oakland, snapping their 12-game losing streak against the Athletics.
The Twins beat the A's for the first time since Sept. 10, 2013
Indians 4, Yankees 1: Carlos Carrasco pitched five innings for his first win as a starting pitcher in more than three years as the Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees.
Rangers 6, Astros 2: The Texas Rangers took advantage of a sloppy defensive performance by Houston to beat the Astros.
Mariners 4, White Sox 2: Austin Jackson had his most productive game since joining the Mariners, going 3-for-4 and driving in all four of Seattle's runs in a victory over the Chicago White Sox.
National League
Dodgers 5, Brewers 1: Left-hander Clayton Kershaw clinched his 14th win of the season and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers.
Kershaw (14-2) gave up six hits over eight innings but the Brewers were left to rue what might have been if not for three disastrous base-running gaffes.
Reds 7, Marlins 2: Catcher Devin Mesoraco homered twice, including a grand slam, and Johnny Cueto pitched eight strong innings to lift the Cincinnati Reds to victory over the Miami Marlins.
The win allowed Cincinnati (60-58), who have gone 9-14 since the All Star break, to avoid being swept by the Marlins in a three-game series.
Padres 8, Pirates 2: Right-hander Tyson Ross pitched six solid innings and right fielder Seth Smith drove in three runs with a triple in the fifth inning to lead the San Diego Padres to a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Phillies 7, Mets 6: The Philadelphia Phillies fought back from a 6-1 deficit to beat the New York Mets.
Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 3 (10 innings)
Corey Dickerson hit a tiebreaking home run with two outs in the 10th inning and the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks for only their third road win in their last 26 games.
Inter-League
Royals 7, Giants 4: Right fielder Nori Aoki reached base four times, swiped three bases and scored two runs as the rampaging Kansas City Royals beat the San Francisco Giants.
Cardinals 8, Orioles 3: Kolten Wong tied a career high with four hits, Peter Bourjos homered and the St. Louis Cardinals avoided a three-game sweep with a victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
Cubs 3, Rays 2 (12 innings): Anthony Rizzo delivered a long walk-off single in the 12th inning to give the Chicago Cubs victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. — Reuters
