With regard to the article "24-hour jail for jumping red signal" (June 17), Jeddah traffic police are the most pathetic not only in the Kingdom but probably in the world. They are not the least bit interested in checking and punishing traffic violators. The objective of Saher in Jeddah is to extort money by tricking drivers by removing timers from signals. Traffic police are doing nothing to check and punish violators. I propose giving a percentage of fines to traffic police in order to motivate them. They stand like spectators at signals talking on mobile phones while drivers violate the law in front of them. Azhar, Online response II. I have often witnessed traffic police arresting only the expat when an expat and a Saudi run a red light. Most punishments for traffic violations are applied to expats instantly not to everyone as is customary in other countries of the world. Mohammed, Online response III. Drivers will continue to run red lights and commit traffic violations thanks to the almost negligible presence of traffic police. Even at places where traffic police are present, drivers flaunt traffic rules with the police seemingly unable or unwilling to do anything about it. Concerned, Online response
