With regard to the article “Saher: Operation OK but patient dead” (Jan. 29), all traffic lights with Saher cameras installed must have a countdown timer. Drivers are never sure whether to cross or stop and if the light suddenly turns red, it will cost you SR500. Indeed every driver in Saudi Arabia is obliged to abide by the traffic laws, but laws are meant to protect society not to trick unwary drivers into pay a hefty fine for no good reason at all. Awais, Online response II. There must be a “light” in the driver's mind, not only in the traffic signal. The driver must keep in mind that he has dependents and that they are waiting for him to return home. Traffic violators must be punished. All traffic signals with Saher cameras must have countdown timers. There are many signals without timers or where the timing system is not working properly. Seat belts are a must for everyone.
Karunakara, Online response III. The increase in traffic accidents since the implementation of Saher is due to the increase in the number of vehicles in the Kingdom. In 2009 in Jeddah, there were few overpasses and underpasses, but the traffic then was very smooth. However, these days there are a lot of newly constructed underpass and overpass roads, but the traffic is horrible. The Saher system has a lot of advantages and helps educate people about traffic rules.
