Sophisticated new Saher cameras have been installed here that can read number plates, identify wanted vehicles and track violations such as speeding and running red lights. The first of these state-of-the-art cameras were set up by Saher technicians at the intersection of Al-Makarona and Gharnata streets Sunday. The cameras and radars were installed on poles similar to those used for traffic signs. The installation will continue for a week followed by experiments to make sure the system works. Col. Zaid Al-Hashim, director of the public relations division at Jeddah Traffic Department, said: “This is the second phase of the Saher system. Any driver who runs a red light will be identified by Saher. The cameras will allow us to find wanted vehicles and follow up on accidents at intersections.” In addition to Saher, he added, undercover police are on patrols to catch traffic violators and send in periodic reports about traffic violations. The first phase of Saher to detect speed violations was launched last April. __
