MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Ben Crane shot a 7-under 63 to take the lead in the suspended first round of the St. Jude Classic, taking advantage of the 3 1/2-hour delay Thursday that left nearly perfect scoring conditions with no wind and rain-softened greens. Crane had five of his seven birdies on his final nine, the last a few minutes before play was suspended because of darkness. Phil Mickelson shot a 67, birdieing three of his final four holes in windy conditions before a thunderstorm softened up the TPC Southwind course. Sixty players were unable to finish the round. Peter Malnati shot a 65, and Billy Horschel also was 5 under with two holes left to play. Retief Goosen and Joe Durant each had a 66, while Stuart Appleby, Zach Johnson and Jason Bohn were on the course at 4 under. Appleby had a hole-in-one on the 157-yard eighth hole, using a 7-iron. That was his 17th hole, and the last one he completed. Crane needed only 24 putts for his best round of the season, including a 27-footer for birdie on his final hole at No. 9 with only a handful of people watching because officials closed the course to spectators because of the high winds with the storm. Wie, Park share LPGA lead Michelle Wie matched her low round of the year with a six-under par 65 Thursday to grab a share of the lead at the $1.5 million LPGA Manulife Financial Classic at Waterloo in Canada.. Wie and South Korean Park Hee-young finished 18 holes one stroke ahead of China's Feng Shanshan with American Cristie Kerr and China's Lin Xi Yu another stroke adrift. Making her 12th start of the season, Wie sizzled early with birdies at the par-3 third, par-5 sixth and par-4 seventh. She closed the front nine with a bogey but answered with a birdie at 11 and closed with birdies on three of the last four holes, the final one from 12 feet after reaching 15 of 18 greens in regulation. Park began a bogey-free stroll on the 10th tee and birdied the 11th, then had back-to-back birdies at the par-5 18th and par-4 first, added another at the third hole and matched Wie's birdies as six and seven as well. Gee, Lundberg tie for lead England's Adam Gee and Sweden's Mikael Lundberg shot 5-under 67 to share a one-stroke lead on a windy and cloudy opening day of the Lyoness Open at Atzenburg in Austria Thursday. Starting on the back nine, Gee eagled the par-4 14th hole but bogeyed the 18th before carding three birdies on the front nine. Lundberg hit six birdies and lost a stroke on the par-3 second. The pair led a group of four which finished at 4 under, including Wales' Rhys Davies, England's Richard Finch and Mattew Baldwin, and American Berry Henson. Defending champion Joost Luiten from the Netherlands hit three birdies in his opening four holes. Later, however, he struggled to hit the fairways and dropped to 1 over before finishing his round level par with his fourth birdie on the 17th. Miguel Angel Jimenez overcame three bogeys in the first eight holes to card a 2-under 70.— Agencies
