JEDDAH — Dr Turki Faisal Al Rasheed will be attending the 4th Annual Gulf Research Meeting at the University of Cambridge, UK on July 2-5, 2013 as director for the “Sustainable Development Challenges in the GCC” workshop. Dr Al Rasheed, a Visiting Research Fellow at Liverpool John Moores University, will be joined by his colleagues Professor David Bryde and Dr Yusra Mouzughi as directors too. Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are increasingly being faced with the same challenges that Western countries have faced in terms of how to balance the need to develop their economies, while at the same time taking into account the impact of such developments on the environment, communities and individuals - the classic concepts of “profit” vs. “planet” vs. “people” or balancing the Triple Bottom Line of “environmental”, “economic” and “social” sustainability. Themes of the workshop include, among others, urban development, planning and real estate; climate change, environment and energy; water management; public and private sector issues; and knowledge & awareness. Around 5,000 invitations were sent worldwide. Sixteen papers were finally selected from those submitted and will be presented by each of the participants. — SG
