Abdulrahman Al-Ali Saudi Gazette JEDDAH – Police arrested three young men accused of robbing SR1,500 from a grocery store after assaulting an employee. Police came to know about the theft after seeing a video of the robbery on YouTube and other social networking sites. When the theft took place around two weeks ago, the grocery's owner, who had recently installed a surveillance camera in the store, decided not to report the incident to police. However, his shopkeeper uploaded the video onto the popular video-sharing website without his knowledge. Jeddah police spokesman First Lt. Nawaf Al-Bouq said the police watched the video and formed an investigation team to check whether the theft had been reported at any Jeddah police station.
“We didn't find any similar theft in our records so we searched for the grocery store's location and spoke to the shopkeeper who confirmed the robbery and provided a detailed description of the three men to police,” he said. Officers were able to arrest the trio in a short time. The men, who are all Saudi citizens, are 23, 20 and 19 years of age. They immediately confessed to the robbery and assault. First Lt. Al-Bouq urged the general public to report all types of thefts, no matter how small, to the security authorities.
Police are looking into other similar cases to determine the trio's possible involvement.
