Abdurahman Al-Ali Saudi Gazette JEDDAH – Makkah Emir Prince Khaled Al-Faisal made a formal announcement on Wednesday evening about completion of the permanent drainage solution projects in Jeddah. The project launching ceremony, held near the dam in Wadi Ghaya, was also attended by Jeddah Governor Prince Mishal Bin Majed, Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs Prince Mansour Bin Miteb, Minister of Finance Ibrahim Al-Assaf, Minister of Water and Electricity Abdullah Al-Hussayen and Minister of Transport Jabara Al-Seraisry. Speaking on the occasion, Prince Khaled said the projects included five dams with a total length of 2500 meters and a total capacity of over 24 million cubic meters, and seven reserve dams with a total length of 1800 meters. The permanent drainage solution projects included construction of dams in Wadi Ghaya, Wadi Um Hablain, Wadi Daghbaj, Wadi Briman, and Wadi Ghalil, as well as expansion of existing canals in the northern, southern and eastern parts of Jeddah and construction of a new canal along King Abdulaziz International Airport. Two Saudi and two international companies have been awarded contracts worth a total of SR3.39 billion to implement these projects. A total of 14 emergency projects to deal with rainwaters and flashfloods in Jeddah were completed in December 2011.
