Mohammed Mar'i Saudi Gazette RAMALLAH – Jerusalem police shot and wounded a Palestinian driver in occupied Jerusalem Sunday. Shmuel Ben Ruby, spokesman of Jerusalem police, said that the 39-year-old driver from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabal Mukaber tried to forcefully enter a police station in the area with his vehicle. Ben Ruby said that after he was initially denied entry, the driver allegedly rammed his car into a border police officer at the entrance to the station. Three police officers witnessed the event and opened fire, hitting the cab and injuring the driver, he said. The spokesman said that the driver is known to the police. In his interrogation after the event, the driver said: “I lost it, I wanted to die, I wanted to hit the station." Israeli police said that recent weeks have seen a spike in attempted attacks in occupied Jerusalem, including stoning and stabbing attempts against police officers. Israel captured East Jerusalem in the June 1967, annexed it in 1980, and has since built settlements there that are home to some 300,000 Jewish settlers. The Palestinians hope to make East Jerusalem the capital of their future state but the Israel says the city is its eternal capital.
