AL-GURAYAT — Many people in Tabarjal governorate (125 km east of Al-Gurayat governorate) scratched their heads as they read the notice in public squares: The police intended to hold an auction of goats. The 38 goats found roaming the streets would be auctioned off at the sheep market, Al-Hayat Arabic daily reported Saturday. A number of citizens were surprised by such an auction — the first of its kind in the governorate — especially since the pretext was not to sell the goats but to find their owners after searching for 20 days. However, no owners came forward to claim the goats, and so the police were left with no choice but to sell off the animals. They will do so under the supervision of a committee comprising several authorities. They took into consideration the cost of the goats' fodder. — SG
