JEDDAH – Police arrested 5,643 people during a crime sweep in the city over the past few weeks, according to Jeddah police spokesman, First Lt. Nawaf Al-Bouq. Of this number, 3,825 were illegal workers, 1,749 beggars of different nationalities and 69 suspects in various crimes. “Raids were carried out after receiving calls on police hotline 642-5550 from citizens and expatriates who reported suspicious activities in various locations,” he said. Cases ranged from thefts, robbery, liquor manufacturing, car-jacking to fraudulent activities and running shops without proper permits. The raids were carried out by officers from Jeddah police and the Criminal Investigation Department.
