A police campaign to clean up the streets in six Jeddah districts has resulted in the detention of more than 1,000 people for violating the terms of their residency by taking part in various criminal activities. The campaign, carried out in the districts of Quweiza, Al-Rawabi, Kilo 11, Kilo 14, Al-Karantina and Ghuleil, targeted carwashers, pickpockets and vagabonds, and also saw the erection of spontaneous checkpoints and searches of shops and stores. Among the detained were 25 people wanted for criminal activities such as robbery and the theft of women's handbags. Spokesman for Jeddah police, 1st Lt. Nawaaf Al-Bawq, has appealed to the public to call a telephone hotline – (02)6425550 – if they have any information concerning criminal activities or violations of the law.
