K.M.A. Perera JEDDAH — A colorful ceremony kicked off the first-ever Saudi Arabian Glass Co. Ltd (SAGCO) Invitational Basketball Tournament at its own court in Industrial Area here Thursday. A parade by the participating eight teams, along with dance and music presentations by the company employees' children, were the highlights of the evening. The General Manager of SAGCO, one of Asia's largest glass bottle manufacturers, Dr. Tariq Al-Fadl declared the event open. The Editor-in-Chief of Saudi Gazette, Khaled Almaeena, attended the ceremony at the invitation of the organizing committee. The SAGCO Sports Committee chairman, Nico De Wet, speaking on the occasion, said next year's event will see many more teams. He hinted that the concept of the tournament will be that of social responsibility toward the communities living in the Industrial Area, besides promoting young talent. This year, only the International Indian School Jeddah was invited to the tournament along with a few other companies. The games will be played on weekends until mid-December. Trophies and medals await the best three finishers at the conclusion of the tournament.
