GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators got their biggest victory yet under second-year coach Will Muschamp, beating Louisiana State Tigers 14-6 in college football on Saturday. For the third time this season, No.10-ranked Florida trailed at halftime against a Southeastern Conference rival and came back to win. The Gators trailed 6-0 at the break, but scored on consecutive drives by running on 17 of 18 plays. Mike Gillislee ended both of them with 12-yard touchdown runs, one in the third quarter and another early in the fourth. The Gators (5-0, 4-0) head to Vanderbilt next week before hosting South Carolina and their old coach Steve Spurrier and then closing out October with their annual neutral-site showdown with Georgia. LSU and top-ranked Alabama played twice last season as the No. 1 and 2-ranked teams, and their upcoming clash on Nov. 3 was widely expected to have the same rankings, but the Tigers' loss put paid to that. This season, the Tigers were again expected to rival Alabama for SEC supremacy, which has recently translated to national supremacy. But now the Tigers will slide from No. 4, with the Gators most likely moving up several notches from the No. 10 ranking they held entering the game. For Florida, which won national championships as recently as 2006 and 2008, it is familiar turf, even if the memory of being a national power was starting to fade. “We know a lot of people have doubted us, but I think the swagger never left,” said Florida defensive back Matt Elam, who caused a key fumble by Tigers receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after Beckham caught a 56-yard pass in the third quarter, the longest play from scrimmage either team managed. LSU was just one of seven undefeated teams to fall Saturday, including Texas, Georgia and Florida State. Iowa State also handed No. 15 Texas Christian its first loss, 37-23, to stop the Horned Frogs' 12-game winning streak, which had been the longest in major college football. Penn State made it four straight victories by beating No. 24 Northwestern 39-28. The Wildcats were trying to go to 6-0. There was no such slip-up for No. 2 Oregon, which had a 52-21 win over Washington. Marcus Mariota threw for 198 yards and four touchdowns, including two TD strikes to tight end Colt Lyerla. Florida State lost 17-16 at North Carolina State despite leading 16-0 at halftime. Mike Glennon found Bryan Underwood for a touchdown pass with 16 seconds left. South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, while Ace Sanders had a dazzling 70-yard punt return touchdown in the Gamecocks 35-7 win over Georgia. No. 7 Kansas State had a 56-16 win over rival Kansas, with John Hubert running for 101 yards and four touchdowns on just 10 carries. West Virginia, ranked No. 8, was a 48-11 winner over Texas. Geno Smith passed for four touchdowns. No. 9 Notre Dame cruised past Miami 41-3. Cierre Wood and George Atkinson III gave the Fighting Irish their first 100-yard rushing duo in a decade.
