No. 21 Stanford outmuscles second-ranked USC yet again
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 17 - 09 - 2012

NEW YORK — Even without Andrew Luck, Stanford still had every answer for Matt Barkley and Southern California.
Josh Nunes threw a go-ahead 37-yard touchdown to Zach Ertz, Stepfan Taylor ran for 153 yards and scored two touchdowns, and No. 21 Stanford upset second-ranked USC, 21-14, Saturday night for its fourth straight win in this series.
Barkley, a Heisman Trophy hopeful, threw for 254 yards and 2 interceptions while completing only 20 of 41 passes. He was sacked twice on the final drive for the Trojans (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12) and threw out of bounds on a final, desperate heave on fourth-and-39 from USC's 25-yard line.
Coming out of a two-year bowl ban, USC had national title hopes. Now the Trojans will have to climb out of a hole to get there.
A sold-out crowd at Stanford Stadium rushed the field, tossing streamers and jumping in a wild celebration at midfield with Stanford coach David Shaw and players caught in the middle of the mess. The Cardinal (3-0, 1-0) are 3-0 for the third straight season for the first time since 1970-72 and have their longest winning streak ever against USC.
Barkley has beaten every conference team but is 0-4 against Stanford. The only chance he has for revenge against the Cardinal now is a rematch in the Pac-12 title game.
Stanford's Jordan Williamson missed field goals of 47 and 23 yards and had a 51-yarder blocked by T. J. McDonald. With a defense that flustered Barkley and a new quarterback who found his footing late, the kicker who missed three field goals in the Fiesta Bowl loss to Oklahoma State last season could smile in the pile with everybody else.
LSU 63, Idaho 14: Ronald Martin and Lavar Edwards each intercepted deflected passes and returned them for scores, and No. 3 Louisiana State rolled at home.
Oregon 63, Tennessee Tech 14: Marcus Mariota threw for 308 yards and 4 touchdowns before No. 4 Oregon pulled its starters against visiting Tennessee Tech, a visiting Football Championship Subdivision team.
De'Anthony Thomas had 222 all-purpose yards on 10 touches. He ran for a 59-yard touchdown and caught a 16-yard scoring pass from Mariota.
Georgia 56, Fla. Atlantic 20: Aaron Murray passed for a career-best 342 yards and 2 touchdowns and also scored twice with short runs for No. 7 Georgia at home.
South Carolina 49, UAB 6: Connor Shaw went 8 of 14 for 107 yards for No. 8 South Carolina at home before reinjuring his throwing shoulder and leaving the game.
WVU 42, James Madison 12: Geno Smith completed 34 of 39 passes for 411 yards and 5 touchdowns at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.
In the home of the Washington Redskins, Smith set No. 9 West Virginia's career passing yardage record, topping Marc Bulger.
Clemson 41, Furman 7: Tajh Boyd threw for 310 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Sammy Watkins had a 58-yard touchdown run in his season debut as No. 11 Clemson won its 30th straight over visiting Furman.
Ohio State 35, California 28: Braxton Miller lofted a 72-yard touchdown pass to an all-alone Devin Smith with 3 minutes 26 seconds left, and Christian Bryant snuffed out visiting California's last chance with an interception for No. 12 Ohio State.
The visiting Golden Bears (1-2) missed three field-goal attempts and had a touchdown called back by a penalty.
Pittsburgh 35, Virginia Tech 17: Ray Graham rushed for 94 yards and 2 scores and added an 18-yard touchdown reception as the Panthers upset the 13th-ranked Hokies.
Kansas State 35, North Texas 21: Collin Klein threw for 230 yards and accounted for 3 touchdowns, Tyler Lockett returned a kickoff 96 yards for another score, and No. 15 Kansas State eased past pesky North Texas at home.
TCU 20, Kansas 6: Casey Pachall threw for 335 yards and 2 touchdowns, both of them to Brandon Carter, and No. 16 Texas Christian overcame four turnovers in its Big 12 debut at Kansas.
Michigan 63, UMass 13: Denard Robinson put up 397 yards of total offense and had 4 touchdowns in No. 17 Michigan's rout at home.
Robinson, who came out of the game with Michigan leading by 56-13 late in the third quarter, rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown and completed 16 of 24 passes for 291 yards and 3 scores.
Florida 37, Tennessee 20: Jeff Driskel threw two touchdown passes and Trey Burton rushed for two more scores as No. 18 Florida scored the final 24 points to win at No. 23 Tennessee. Mike Gillislee ran for 115 yards to lead a 336-yard rushing effort for the Gators.
Louisville 39, N. Carolina 34: Teddy Bridgewater threw three first-half touchdowns and No. 19 Louisville scored on its first six possessions but then had to hold North Carolina with a late goal-line stand to win at home.
In other games it was: Notre Dame 20, Michigan St. 3; Florida State 52, Wake Forest 0; Alabama 52, Arkansas 0; Texas 66, Mississippi 31; Utah 24, Brigham Young 21; Arizona 56, South Carolina State 0; UCLA 37, Houston 6. — Agencies
