JEDDAH — Civil Defense firefighters battled a fire that broke out in one of the high-rise buildings in the Al-Iskan apartment complex in Sharafiyah district of Jeddah Friday morning. A firefighter from the Civil Defense fire station located 800 meters from the area saw smoke coming from the building and reported it. Four firefighting teams, three rescue teams, an ambulance and firefighting trucks were dispatched to the scene. A spokesman for the Makkah Civil Defense Directorate said the fire broke out in the 13th floor of the building. People on the top floors took the stairs to the roof and stayed there. Rescue teams evacuated all the floors while firefighters tackled the fire, which destroyed everything in the apartment. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a short circuit in the air-conditioning system, the spokesman added. No one was injured in the fire, the spokesman said. He called on the general public to be more careful and avoid making mistakes that can cost the lives of innocent people. He also urged them to purchase fire extinguishers and keep them in their homes.
