The United Nations Security Council issued a statement on Wednesday expressing its concerns about the escalation of violence in Syria and the country's deteriorating situation. The statement talked about the massacres in Syria but did not talk about the perpetrators. The statement was issued based on a French proposal and Russian conditions that it should be “balanced” so that the world body can get the support of Russia and China to endorse the efforts of Kofi Annan, the UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, to secure a ceasefire, allow humanitarian aid to the Syrian people and initiate a dialogue between the regime and the opposition for a “balanced” political settlement. The Security Council statement contains a list of world's wishes rather than workable solutions to the Syrian crisis. Russia and China are supporting Al-Assad's regime unequivocally. Moscow's condition for a “balanced” solution to the crisis is a deceptive maneuver designed to allow Al-Assad to stay in power. And as long as Al-Assad is in power, it is wishful thinking to assume that he will start caring about the needs of his own people. It has been obvious from the start of the Syrian uprising that Russia and China are not bothered about the plight of the Syrian people. They are more interested in advancing their own interests in Syria and the Middle East. Russia wants to persuade the world that it is concerned about the genocide in Syria, but the truth is that it has been sending arms which the Al-Assad regime has been using to kill innocent civilians. The Al-Assad regime will not stop the genocide in Syria as long as there are countries supporting it like Russia and China. Rather than issuing hollow statements, more concrete efforts are needed to stop the regime's atrocities. If and when the regime is toppled by force, the world should never forget that Russia and China can never be trusted to be world leaders because of the heartless role they have played in the Syrian crisis. __
