IF the Syrian regime had accepted the Arab League's plan, it would have found a way out of its crisis. But because it has acted arrogantly, it has only two options left. The Syrian regime either has to accept whatever decision the United Nations Security Council takes or prepare itself for a civil war which may drag the entire country over a political and economic precipice. The lastest news report said that the Security Council was drafting a resolution, with the help of the Arab League, that would condemn the continuing violence of the Syrian regime against its own people and impose sanctions on Damascus. In Syria, the opposition seems to have braced itself for more violence. The Syrian regime could have prevented this dilemma if it had responded positively to the Arab League's plan, which reflected the demands of the Syrian people to form a government that they believe would represent them and allow them to live decent and honorable lives. But, this has become wishful thinking as the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad prefers to fight its own people in the hope that over time it can suppress their will. The Syrian regime has used every trick it can to deceive the Arab League into believing that it would accept the honorable solution the League has offered to end the unnecessary bloodshed. After signing the Arab League plan, the regime insidiously continued the massacre of its own people who have dreamed of a new dawn in the impoverished country. The Arabs and the entire world cannot remain fence-sitters while the Syrian regime commits genocide against its own people so that it can stay in power to serve the selfish interests of a heartless tyrant and his minions. The world must support whatever sanctions the Arabs and the UN decide upon in order to realize the dream of the Syrian people. __
