The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) has reiterated that Arabic language is crucial to the identity of all Arabs from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf and all over the world. The ALECSO statement coincided with the occasion of Arabic Language Day which is held on March 1 every year. It said: “The Arabic language is capable of bringing all Arabs together and uniting them. It is the reservoir which contains the treasures of their culture and civilization as well as intellectual work and contemporary literature”. It blamed the deteriorating level of the Arabic language on the lack of a vigilant linguistic authority which prevents distortions introduced by mistake and offers Arabic terms for common non-Arabic words and terms. ALECSO called for setting up a strong Arabic complex which translates scientific terms in all fields of knowledge into Arabic. It said: “Most Arab universities teach science in foreign languages, a matter which threatens Arabic and prevents it from keeping up with science technology”.
