Top-seeded David Goffin of Belgium advanced to the quarterfinals of the BMW Open by beating Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 Thursday. Goffin, who had a bye into the second round, next plays eighth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany, who beat Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4. Zverev's huge serve proved decisive even on the slow clay. He had only five aces but won 31 of 32 of his first-serve points, while never facing a break point against Rosol, who double-faulted four times. Fourth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber eased past fellow German Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal against Juan Martin del Potro, who beat JanLennard Struff of Germany 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in his second clay-court match in three years. The Argentine is coming back from another wrist injury. He controlled the match until a short rain break, but came back strongly in the third. Del Potro struggled to put the match away, however, wasting four match points at 5-1. But he closed it out in his next service game. Fabio Fognini of Italy progressed after beating Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 7-5, and next faces Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia. Kovalik, a lucky loser who took the place of the injured Gael Monfils, beat Dutch qualifier Igor Sijsling 6-3, 6-4. Safarova, Pliskova in semis In Prague, second-seeded Lucie Safarova extended her resurgence into the semifinals of the Prague Open by fighting past unseeded Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan 7-6 (3), 7-5 Thursday. Safarova didn't win a singles match this season before claiming three in a row in Prague. She improved her record against Hsieh to 2-0 but knew it wouldn't come easy. She will face defending champion Karolina Pliskova, who cruised past Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-2, 6-1. Fourth-seeded Sam Stosur of Australia advanced after beating fifth-seeded Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4) to play top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova or Monica Puig. Busta, Almagro advance In Portugal, eighth-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain reached his fourth clay-court quarterfinal of the year when he defeated Taro Daniel of Japan 6-4, 7-5 in the Estoril Open Thursday. Busta broke Daniel five times. He was runner-up in Sao Paulo this year, and is still chasing his first ATP title. Also, Nicolas Almagro of Spain, the Buenos Aires finalist in February rallied to defeat fourth-seeded Joao Sousa of Portugal 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 behind 13 aces. Bacsinszky in semifinals In Morocco, top-seeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland advanced to the semifinals of the Grand Prix SAR, saving all four break-points she faced against Johanna Larsson of Sweden in a 6-4, 6-1 win Thursday. Bacsinszky, ranked 15th, broke Larsson's serve three times, and next faces either fifth-seeded Timea Babos of Hungary or Pauline Parmentier of France, who played their quarterfinal late. Former champion Kiki Bertens needed nearly three hours to beat No. 8 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-3. She next faces 186th-ranked Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, who beat Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia 6-4, 6-4 in a match opposing two qualifiers. Dimitrov thru In Turkey, second-seeded Grigor Dimitrov had to overcome some tough resistance from qualifier Adrian Ungur before coming through 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 for a place in the quarterfinals of the Istanbul Open Wednesday. Dimitrov, who reached the semifinals in Istanbul last year, next faces sixth-seed Jiri Vesely, who rallied to beat Roberto Carballes Baena 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2. Fourth-seeded Federico Delbonis defeated Dudi Sela 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the second round to also make the quarters, while eighth-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas beat Karen Khachanov 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to advance. In the remaining first round match on Wednesday, Illya Marchenko defeated Maximo Gonzalez 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
