MUNICH — Wild-card entry Janko Tipsarevic rallied to beat sixth-seeded Bernard Tomic 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the first round of the BMW Open clay-court tournament Tuesday. Tipsarevic, once ranked No. 8 in the world, is making a comeback after being sidelined 17 months following two surgeries to remove a benign tumor from his left foot. Fifth-seeded Philip Kohlschreiber eased into the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jiri Vesely. Eighth-seeded Fabio Fognini beat “lucky loser” qualifier Bastian Trinkler 6-2, 7-6 (3), and Simone Bolelli defeated qualifier Dustin Brown 6-1, 7-6 (2). Gasquet wins on return In Portugal, fifth seed Richard Gasquet made a winning return after nearly six weeks out with a back injury as the Frenchman beat Marinko Matosevic of Australia 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 at the Estoril Open Tuesday. Gasquet was one of two French winners as qualifier Kenny De Schepper put out Portugal's Gastao Elias 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to move into a second-round meeting with Gasquet. Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta advanced over Constant Lestienne of France 6-3, 6-1. Gasquet has played a pair of finals in Portugal, losing to Novak Djokovic in 2007 and Juan Martin del Potro in 2012. Gasquet finished with nine aces and three breaks of serve. He won the opening set in a tiebreaker and broke early to dominate the second set on the way to victory. Pliskova advances In Prague, top-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic overcame a slow start, cold and rain to defeat Annika Beck of Germany in the first round of the Prague Open Tuesday. The 14th-ranked Pliskova came back to defeat her 80th-ranked opponent 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 for her fourth victory over the German in five meetings. The match was held up by more than three hours because of rain and was later suspended due to rain with Beck leading 2-1 in the final set. In the second round, Pliskova will face Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, who beat Belarusian qualifier Olga Govortsova 7-5, 6-1. Third-seeded Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic reached the second round by beating Madison Brengle of the United States 7-6 (5), 6-3.
