Dar Al-Hekma University law students honored
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 03 - 04 - 2016

The National Lawyer Committee honored Dar Al-Hekma University law students during its second meeting, which was held in Shaikh Saleh Al-Turki's Hall in Jeddah Chamber of Commerce, last Monday. Yassin Khayat, the chairman of the National Lawyer Committee, felicitated Dar Al-Hekma University's law team for its accomplishment in the Pre-Moot Middle East last month that took place in Bahrain and for their participation in the annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna last week.
The team members who were honored at the end of the meeting were: Lamia Al-Otaibi, Lina Bugshan, Diala Al Kabani, Ghaidaa Mohamed, Lynn Sharbatly and Majdoleen Yamani with their coach Jude Jamjoom, a Dar Al-Hekma law graduate.
"Dar Al-Hekma University is very proud of the law team's accomplishments. Being recognized locally is very important to these students since this is the environment in which they will work and grow. The excellence and enthusiasm of the law program's leadership are evident in their accomplishments in the "Pre-Moot Middle East Competition" and the "Willem C. Vis Moot Competition." The students challenged themselves and became role models for their fellow students," said Dr. Suhair Hassan Al-Qurashi, the president of Dar Al-Hekma University.
It was the fourth time Dar Al-Hekma University's law team participated in the Pre-Moot Middle East round. The team romped home with five awards, out of the total seven, given away during the competition. The awards were: Champions Team Winner, Best Claimant Memorandum, Best Respondent Individual Oralist Winner and two Mena Chambers Awards. The Best Individual Oralist for Respondent was given to Diala Al-Kabani; two Mena Chambers Awards were given to Ghaidaa Mohamed and Lynn Sharbatly for their exceptional performance in the competition.
Khayat invited Dar Al-Hekma University's law team during the second meeting of lawyers in Jeddah after having worked with a number of graduates during their training in his office and he was amazed with their knowledge.
"I need to tell all male lawyers that they should feel threatened as the creative female lawyers' generation has begun to demonstrate its abilities and we are very proud of them. They did an amazing job. May God bless them all and we will stand by them and help them. We hope that all Saudi universities participate like our daughters from Dar Al-Hekma University at these international fora and represent the Kingdom," said the Lawyer Tarig Al-Shami, a member of National Lawyer Committee in Jeddah Chamber of Commerce.
"Last year I was part of the winning team in the Pre-Moot, and I went through the same experience this team went through, with my limited experience I managed to train Dar Al-Hekma University's team on all the details I learned last year from the arbitrators. The case came out in October, but we began training before that as our first meeting took place in September. Dr. Olga and I spent almost a whole month training the students on memo-writing in the IRAC style. Then, we started training on using persuasion and the best way to address the arbitrators. Once the case was out, we started the research to strengthen our argument while writing the memos. Thanks to God our team was able to win and represent our beloved country in the best light," said Jamjoom, the team trainer, in her inspirational speech during the event.
