Thorburn nets Jets' winnier
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 11 - 2015

Chris Thorburn wasn't even supposed to be on the ice, and yet he scored the game-winning goal for the Winnipeg Jets.
Thorburn scored his first short-handed goal with 8:51 left to lift the Jets over the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 Saturday night.
Thorburn was only on the penalty kill because Andrew Ladd was in the box.
"Chris does the same things whether he plays 3 minutes or he plays 15 minutes," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "We'll take a 3-2 goal from anybody, but it's really great when you can get a heart-and-soul guy, subs in on the penalty kill because we've got a (penalty) killer in the box, and he scores a goal like that — all effort."
Mark Scheifele and Dustin Byfuglien also scored to help the Jets earn consecutive wins for the first time since Oct. 31.
Winnipeg goaltender Ondrej Pavelec left the game after two periods due to a lower-body injury. He stopped 20 of the 22 shots before Michael Hutchinson earned the win in relief by stopping seven third-period shots.
Shane Doan and Connor Murphy had power-play goals in the first period for Arizona. Anders Lindback made 20 saves.
Rangers 5, Panthers 4 (OT): New York center Rick Nash had a hat-trick, including the game-winner on the power play in overtime, as the Rangers beat the Florida Panthers 5-4 at BB&T Center.
Mats Zuccarello and Viktor Stalberg also scored for New York (15-3-2).
Red Wings 4, Blues 3 (OT): Detroit winger Teemu Pulkkinen's power-play goal with 18.8 seconds left in overtime gave the Red Wings a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Blues.
The Red Wings got the power play with 1:56 left in the overtime when Blues defenseman Colton Parayko was called for interference.
Stars 3, Sabres 0: Dallas winger Jamie Benn scored two goals, Tyler Seguin had two assists and goaltender Antti Niemi stopped all 22 shots he faced as the Stars defeated the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 at American Airlines Center.
Benn recorded both of his goals in the third period, scoring a power-play goal off a rebound at 7:11 and then converting off the rush 1:53 later at 9:04 for his 14th goal of the season.
Sharks 3, Penguins 1: San Jose's Patrick Marleau got his 1,000th career point, then added his 1,001st, with assists on goals by defenseman Brent Burns as the Sharks downed the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1.
Phil Kessel scored for Pittsburgh, who had won two in a row.
Capitals 7, Avalanche 3: Evgeny Kuznetsov notched a goal and two assists, and the Washington Capitals jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one period en route to a 7-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.
The 23-year-old Kuznetsov assisted on two of Washington's first four tallies and provided some breathing room with a power-play goal that made it 5-2 early in the third.
Senators 4, Flyers 0: The Ottawa Senators ended a five-game homestand with their second straight shutout, downing the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 at Canadian Tire Centre.
Goalie Craig Anderson was again the backbone, making 36 saves for his 31st career shutout and second of the season. Anderson has now gone 132:34 since allowing a goal.
Lightning 5, Ducks 0: Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop picked up his first shutout of the season and center Steven Stamkos was a force on offense as the Lightning blanked the Ducks 5-0 in a performance that suggests they may have finally turned the corner.
Other results: Wild 4, Predators 0; Canucks 6, Blackhawks 3; Bruins 2, Maple Leafs 0. — Agencies
