Flyers end 6-game losing streak
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 09 - 11 - 2015

Michal Neuvirth provided reason for optimism at the end of a long road trip in a so-far trying season for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Neuvirth made 28 saves, Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds scored on the power play and the Flyers beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-0 Saturday night to end a six-game losing streak. Neuvirth has three wins this season, all via shutout.
"That's the way we want to end this road trip," Neuvirth said. "It's been a long 10 days and I thought we were getting better each game. I thought it was a great team effort."
The Flyers jumped ahead early on Schenn's score, then Neuvirth backed a 1-0 lead until Philadelphia scored twice more in the third. Matt Read added an empty-net goal with 1:35 left.
Ondrej Pavelec stopped 20 of 22 shots for the Jets. It was the first time this season the Jets were shut out.
Canadiens 4, Bruins 2: Center David Desharnais scored late in the third period to lift the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-2 come-from-behind win over the Boston Bruins.
Goaltender Mike Condon stopped 29 shots for Montreal, while Jonas Gustavsson made 29 saves for the Bruins.
Center Tomas Plekanec and left wingers Lars Eller and Max Pacioretty also scored for the Canadiens. Left winger Loui Eriksson and center Frank Vatrano scored for Boston.
Sabres 3, Canucks 2: Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen scored his second goal of the game with 16.8 seconds remaining to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
Left winger Jamie McGinn also scored for the Sabres, who got 35 saves from goalie Linus Ullmark.
Center Henrik Sedin and left winger Chris Higgins scored for the Canucks.
Vancouver goalie Ryan Miller, playing in his first game in Buffalo against his former team, made 19 saves.
Kings 4, Panthers 1: Defenseman Drew Doughty and center Anze Kopitar scored goals less than a minute apart late in the second period as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Florida Panthers.
Center Jeff Carter and left winger Milan Lucic also scored for Los Angeles, while Jonathan Quick made 18 saves. Center Nick Bjugstad scored for the Panthers.
Capitals 3, Maple Leafs 2 (SO): Nicklas Backstrom tied the score with less than one second left in regulation before Alex Ovechkin scored the only goal in the shootout as the Washington Capitals rallied to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The first three players for each team missed their shots before Ovechkin took his time and shot past Toronto goalie James Reimer. Capitals goalie Braden Holtby then stopped center Nazem Kadri to seal the win.
Backstrom forced overtime when he scored with eight-tenths of a second left in regulation off a pass from right winger Justin Williams.
Hurricanes 3, Senators 2 (OT): Jeff Skinner scored with 3.3 seconds left in regulation on Carolina's 43rd shot against Andrew Hammond before Jordan Staal won it in overtime.
Hammond was under siege in the final 2-1/2 minutes of regulation with Cam Ward pulled for an extra attacker and then Staal scored his third goal of the season with 2:09 left in overtime.
Alex Chiasson and Chris Wideman scored 4-1/2 minutes apart in the second period as the Senators took a 2-1 lead into the third period but could not hold it.
Wild 1, Lightning 0: Minnesota's Devan Dubnyk won a goaltending battle in a game in which a defenseman scored the lone goal as the Wild escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Dubnyk made 30 saves to earn his 16th career shutout and second of the season while defenseman Jared Sprurgeon's second-period goal stood up. Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop made 24 saves.
Other results: Blues 4, Predators 0; Rangers 4, Coyotes 1; Ducks 1, Sharks 0; Flames 5, Penguins 2.
