Published in The Saudi Gazette on 05 - 11 - 2015

Host school Al Yasmin International School, Riyadh, who represented the country China, emerged winners in the fifth edition of the Peevees United Nations Simulation Conference – 2015 (Zonal) event here with this year's theme being ‘Together for a better tomorrow.'
The annual event was held at the Peevees Group of Schools, KSA. Delegates from different schools representing 14 countries, US, Russia, UK, Italy, China, Australia, Brazil, Germany, South Africa, Portugal, Canada, France, Columbia and Pakistan discussed over the global issues and gained valuable experience.
Forty-two students from schools in Riyadh, namely, Al Yasmin Int'l School, Modern Int'l School, Daratassalam Int'l School-(DPS), International Indian School, International Indian Public School, Al Alif Int'l School, Modern Middle East Int'l School, and Saudi Arabian Int'l School, participated in the event. The entire venue was lit up with vibrant colorful flags of different countries.
The first runner up trophy was bagged by another team from Al Yasmin International School. The team represented the country Australia, the second runner up trophy was won by DPS, Riyadh, who represented France and the third runner up trophy went to Modern International School, Riyadh, who represented Pakistan. The participants and the winners were awarded certificates and trophies.
The program began with recitation of verses from the Holy Qur'an. Al Yasmin Principal K. Rahamathullah delivered the welcome address. Christof Van Agt, senior energy analyst, International Energy Forum, Riyadh, was the chief guest. Ibrahim Subhan, accountant, International Energy Forum, Riyadh, was the guest of honor. Dr. Shoukat Parwez, convener, CBSE schools, Saudi Chapter, principal of IISR, Mohd Haneefa, principal, Modern International School, and Shaffi, vice principal, Modern International School were present.
The panel of judges included Eide Hilal, IT analyst, entrepreneur and motivational speaker, Sanjay Kharate, HoD English Dept Yara International School, and Mrs. Hepzeeba Thomas, HoD, Social Science Dept., Al Alia International School.
The issues discussed at the conference were under two topics. ‘Junk Food and Healthy Living' for General Assembly and ‘Poverty, Hunger and Drinking Water' for Security Council. The Model United Nations Conference was an authentic replica of the UN General Assembly. The session was led by Master Nihal Nayeem, as the Chair Person, Master Nauman Nayeem, as the Director and Ms. Amal Abdul Latheef as the Rapporteur.
The students, better known as "delegates" were the ambassadors of UN member states, representing different countries to debate current issues. They prepared the draft resolutions and strategies, negotiated with supporters and adversaries, resolved conflicts, and navigated the UN's rules of procedure — all in the interest of mobilizing "international cooperation" and to resolve problems that affect almost every country on Earth. Soon after the feedback from the judges, the winners were declared and prizes were distributed by the dignitaries who attended the conference.
It was really an honor for Al Yasmin International School to conduct such a successful and memorable event. The finalist will be participating in the 5th Peevees United Nations Simulation Conference – 2015 (Finals) which is to be held in Dammam,. P. Kadhiresan , vice principal, boys section, Al Yasmin International School, proposed the vote of thanks.
