B E W A R E of fabricated Ahadith (Part 6)
By Mohammed Aqil
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 16 - 12 - 2011

Kissing the thumbs on hearing the name of the Prophet (peace be upon him)A lot of people nowadays resort to fabricated AHadith for reference or do an act which has no basis in our religion. They are neither mentioned in the Qur'an nor in the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him). They are useless and baseless, nevertheless, they are deemed as authentic by some misguided sects.
Let us throw light on another fabricated Hadith and become aware of its evil spread in the society.
“The Noble Messenger (peace be upon him) is reported to have said, “On the Day of Judgment, I shall search for the person who used to place his thumbs on his eyes when hearing my name during the Adhan. I shall lead him into Jannat.” According to Shami, he says, “On the testimony (of Prophethood) in Adhan, it is Mustahab to say “Sallallahu Alaika Ya Rasoolallah Sallallaho Alaihi wa Sallam on the first and “Quratu Aini bika Ya Rasool Allah Subhanuhu wa Ta'ala on the second. Then, place the nails of your thumbs on your eyes and say, “Allahumma Matti'ni bis-Sam'i wal-Basr.” The Noble Prophet Sallalahu alaihi wa Sallam will lead the person who does this into Jannat.
The Hadith quoted above is unauthentic as it is devoid of any authentic chain of narrators apart from being gratuitous. However, it has not stopped from spreading around the world, and whenever people hear Prophet's (peace be upon him) name they touch their thumbs to their eyes and kiss the tips of their fingers.
Another unreasonable belief, which also does not have a sound proof in the Qur'an and the Ahadith, is that never will the eyes of the person who does that will pain and nor will he become blind. (Imam Sakhawee, Al Maqasid Al Hasana, page 605) According to Sheikh Albani it is fabricated and according to Dr. Syed Saeed Abidi this is not a Hadith at all.
Prescribed for the Muslims upon hearing the name of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is to send blessings (salam) to him. It is narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that the “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “May his nose be rubbed in the dust, a man in whose presence my name is mentioned and he does not send blessings upon me.” (Tirmidhi)
It was narrated from Hussain Ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The miser is the one in whose presence my name is mentioned and he does not send blessings upon me.” (Tirmidhi)
Kissing the thumbs on hearing the Prophet's name is an innovation in Islam and it has been introduced by Sufis and deviant groups.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever does an action that is not in accordance with this matter of ours (Islam) will have it rejected.” And the Prophet (peace be upon him) also said, “Beware of newly-invented matters, as every newly-invented matter is misguidance and every misguidance goes to Hellfire.”
A Muslim should adhere to the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah only. They should make themselves aware of fabricated books which are filled with numerous, baseless innovated narrations.
Allah has perfected His religion and He says, “This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (Qur'an, 5:3)
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) died when the message of Allah had been conveyed to his Ummah in full. He did not leave anything good unless he enjoined that upon us, and he did not leave anything bad unless he forbade it to us and warned us against it.
May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him). __
