The 2nd Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Organ Transplantation Congress, to be opened here today by Prince Sattam Bin Abdul Aziz, Acting Emir of Riyadh, has received confirmation from a record number of 861 participants from around the world. Dr. Faissal A.M. Shaheen, President of Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT), which is organizing the four-day event, said this was the first time the congress is having so many topics on its agenda. Participants registered for the training courses will receive certificates of attendance, and the congress will transmit its proceedings online, he said. Shaheen said registered participants include medical technicians, nurses and doctors. The congress will offer a number of training programs for technicians, nurses and other medical staff on topics such as “Quality healthcare for patients with renal disease”, “Coordination between donation and organ transplantation” and “The use of advanced technology in organ transplantation”. He said 12 distinguished medical experts from America, Europe, Asia and GCC countries will discuss topics that include optimizing organ procurement and organ utilization, status of organ failure and organ transplantation in GCC countries, ethical, social and religious aspects of transplantation, advances in investigations in solid organ transplantation, updates in organ transplantation and other special issues. The attendees will be divided into batches for the courses they have registered for, Shaheen added. The participants will have to attend the full course of the program to be eligible for certificates, he said. He said the congress is designed for physicians, surgeons, scientists and organ procurement personnel, who are interested in clinical and research aspects of transplantation with a cutting edge scientific program. __
