The forthcoming organ transplantation congress here wherein prominent international medical experts will participate will address some of the challenges faced by Saudi Arabia and other GCC states, particularly in the field of organ donation and transplantation, said Dr. Faissal A.M. Shaheen, President of SCOT, the organizer of the four-day event. Dr. Shaheen told Saudi Gazette that the 2nd Organ Transplantation Congress 2011 for GCC states will have 12 distinguished international guest speakers from the US, Europe, Asia and GCC countries and discuss topics including optimizing organ procurement and organ utilization, status of organ failure and organ transplantation in GCC countries, ethical, social and religious aspects of transplantation, advances in investigations in solid organ transplantation, updates in organ transplantation and special issues in organ transplantation. SCOT is organizing the event in collaboration with the Transplantation Society (TTS) and International Society of Nephrology (ISN). It will be held at King Faisal Hall from Oct. 3 to 6, said Dr. Shaheen. “The significance of the forthcoming event is reflected from the participation of distinguished international speakers that will focus on two important issues facing the GCC states,” said Dr. Shaheen. He said international speakers, renowned in organ transplantation, urology professors and researchers have confirmed participation. They will present scientific papers and share information that will be of great significance not only for Saudi Arabia but for the entire region, he said. “The organizing committee of the conference has made program, which will refresh knowledge and explore the innovations in the transplantation science and have an opportunity to meet the leading experts in the transplantation field,” said Dr. Shaheen. About 700 participants are expected to attend the four-day event divided into workshops and 10 plenary sessions, he said. __
