Anthony Vasquez won his major league debut with a ton of run support and fellow rookie Dustin Ackley had three RBIs as the Seattle Mariners split a day-night doubleheader Tuesday, taking the second game 12-7 over the sinking Cleveland Indians, who failed to build off an emotional win earlier. Vasquez (1-0) was one of five first-year players in Seattle's starting lineup, but whatever the Mariners lacked in experience, they made up for with quality swings while scoring five runs in both the third and fourth innings. Ackley got all three RBIs off Zach McAllister (0-1). The Indians won the opener 7-5 with a walk-off homer by Shin-Soo Choo to snap a four-game losing streak, but couldn't gain any ground on AL Central-leading Detroit. Kusoke Fukudome and Choo hit solo homers and Jack Hannahan had a career-high four hits for Cleveland, which went 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position. Athletics 6, Yankees 5: Brandon Allen hit two tape-measure homers, Eric Sogard connected for one that barely cleared the wall and the Oakland Athletics hung on to beat the New York Yankees. Brandon McCarthy ran the A's stretch of superb pitching into the eighth before allowing a two-out, three-run homer to Nick Swisher that lifted a quiet crowd. The three runs were one more than Oakland had given up in the previous three games combined. Tigers 2, Rays 1: Brad Penny pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Alex Avila had an RBI single and the Detroit Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays. Penny (9-9) gave up one run and eight hits over 61/3 innings. He had gone 1/3 with a 6.99 ERA in his previous five starts. Orioles 8, Twins 1: Alfredo Simon allowed one run and three hits in a career-high eight innings, and Vladimir Guerrero and Mark Reynolds both had three hits as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Minnesota Twins. Other results: Kansas City 6, Toronto 4; Boston 11, Texas 5; LA Angels 5, White Sox 4.
