Six children were among seven people killed when a school bus plunged into a river in India's state of Goa, dpa cited police as saying on Saturday. The accident took place after the brakes of the bus failed and the vehicle fell into the Kalvi river in northern Goa, some 30 kilometres from state capital Panaji. State police chief Krishan Kumar said the bodies of six pupils and a woman were recovered from the river. The bus driver and conductor managed to jump off the bus, which ran off the ferry ramp into the river. Police said they did not have the exact number of children on board but witnesses said there were around 15 children in the bus. Police teams and divers launched a search operation. Goa authorities announced 200,000 rupees (4,000 dollars) in compensation to the victims' families.
