Polls opened Sunday in general elections in Guatemala on Sunday, with 10 candidates vying to succeed outgoing President Alvaro Colom, according to dpa. Voters would also elect legislators and hundreds of mayors. The favourite to succeed Colom are retired general Otto Perez Molina of the Patriotic Party, followed by businessman Manuel Baldizon. According to the latest opinion polls, neither of the two frontrunners will be able to claim an absolute majority, and thus will trigger a runoff election in November. A great contingent of police will be deployed to provide the security for the country's more than 7 million voters.
