No immediate casualties or damage to property were reported and no tsunami warnings were issued, according to a report of the German Press Agency "DPA". The epicentre of the 6:56 pm (0956 GMT) quake was in the northern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, about 130 kilometres north-east of Tokyo. The quake struck at a depth of 20 kilometres.
