A strong typhoon lashed Taiwan Sunday morning, bringing heavy rains and strong winds. Rainfalls in Yilan and Hualien counties had exceeded 200 mm since typhoon Fanapi made landfall in Hualien at 8:40 a.m., Xinhua quoted the island's meteorological department as saying. All schools in Taiwan, except those in Kinmen and Matsu, were suspended and business stopped. The typhoon has also grounded all flights within the island and flights between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. No casualties have been reported so far. The typhoon had caused huge waves in the Taiwan Strait and will bring about storms in the coastal areas of Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland.
