Taiwan on Friday issued a maritime warning for Typhoon Fanapi, which is moving toward the island from the Pacific Ocean. By 11 pm (1500 GMT), the eye of Fanapi was 600 kilometres east of Hualien on Taiwan's east coast, dpa cited the Central Weather Bureau as reporting. Moving in a north-westerly direction at 10 kilometres per hour (km/h), Fanapi packs centre winds of 144 km/h and gusts of 180 km/h. The bureau expects Fanapi, whose speed is increasing and typhoon circle is expanding, to bring strong winds and heavy rain to east and south-east Taiwan over the weekend.
