An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook Jayapura, Papua Province, Saturday at 8.08 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB). The quake's epicenter was located at 3.03 degrees southern latitude and 140.00 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 29 km below sea level, and around 96 km southwest of Jayapura, according to information from the National Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency here Saturday. The temblor also started at a point 383 km northeast of Timika, Papua; 432 km northeast of Keawkwa, Papua; 481 km southeast of Biak, Papua; and 3,702 km northeast of Jakarta. The earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, ANTARA quoted the agency as saying. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
