As many as 180 Parliament Speakers are participating in the 3rd World Conference of Speakers of Parliament that started its three-day works today in the Assembly Hall of the United Nations in Geneva. The overall theme of the Conference is "Parliaments in a world of crisis: securing global democratic accountability for the common good." The Conference will discuss the international draft to transfer Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to an inter-governmental organization - a proposal that some Arab States expressed some reservation to some of its aspects and seek during the meeting to present their stands. The delegation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is headed by the Speaker of Majlis Al Shura, Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al-Sheikh. The Conference is convened by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and chaired by its President, Dr. Theo-Ben Gurirab.
