Two people drowned and rescuers evacuated hundreds of others when flash floods caused by heavy rain hit southern Serbia, dpa quoted police as saying Sunday. An elderly man and a middle-aged woman were swept away in their hut Saturday when the Pcinja river burst its banks in Trgoviste, a village 350 kilometres south of Belgrade. Their bodies were recovered on Sunday, police said in Vranje, the nearby regional centre. One man was rescued from the floodwaters while 300 people were evacuated from their homes. Police and military rescue units from other parts of the country rushed to the area, which is one of the poorest regions of Serbia. -- SPA
