Two people were killed and seven injured Saturday in a highway pileup involving nine vehicles in northeast China's Liaoning Province, local traffic police said. The accident occurred Saturday noon on the Huludao City section of a highway linking Beijing and Shenyang City, capital of Liaoning. The two died after their sedan collided with a truck and caught fire, Xinhua quoted a spokesman with the municipal traffic police as saying. The injured were being treated in a local hospital, he said. Eye witnesses said the smoke from a truck carrying sawdust, which suddenly caught on fire, could have affected the view of drivers behind it and caused the pileup. The police were investigating the cause of the accident, the spokesman said. All the nine vehicles caught fire, but no explosion occurred. The flames were put out at 6 p.m., he said. The highway's traffic from Shenyang to Beijing had resumed. However, the driving speed was down to 10 kilometers in one section, he added.
