The European Union today expressed its backing for a "negotiated solution to the current crisis in Honduras" and urged all parties "to refrain from any action that might increase tension and violence.", according to dpa. Sweden, holder of the rotating presidency of the 27-nation bloc, issued the statement on behalf of the EU. The statement was issued after ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya - who was exiled at the end of June - returned to the Central American country, reappearing Monday after seeking refuge in the Brazilian embassy. In reaction, a curfew has been imposed in Honduras. The EU said it supported efforts by the Organization of American States (OAS) "to facilitate dialogue and restoration of the constitutional order." In July, EU member states halted bilateral development cooperation, with the exception of humanitarian assistance and emergency relief.
