NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer says the military alliance needs to define a new strategy to deal with the challenges it now faces, according to AP. De Hoop Scheffer, who is stepping down from his post at the end of July, says NATO's major challenges now include its mission in Afghanistan, its relationship with Russia and new threats like cybercrime, energy security and piracy. De Hoop Scheffer says NATO should use its 60th anniversary summit, co-hosted by France and Germany next month, to begin work on a «a comprehensive approach to the security challenges of our time.» The Dutch diplomat participated in a conference Wednesday in the Hungarian capital celebrating the 10th anniversary of NATO membership for Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
