A passenger bus plunged into a river in the Indian part of Kashmir on Wednesday, killing at least 33 people, AP quoted police sources as saying. The accident occurred near Pranoo village, some 105 miles (170 kilometers) northeast of Jammu town, K. Rajindera, the inspector general of police for the state's Jammu region said. An additional 19 people were injured in the accident, and rescue operations were continuing, Rajindera said. The bus plunged about 250 feet (76 meters) into the fast-moving Chenab river. The cause of the accident was not immediately known, but Rajindera said the 32-seater vehicle was overcrowded. Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by aging vehicles, overloading and reckless driving.
