An elderly woman was killed and hudreds of houses damaged when a tectonic earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted Lahat district and Pagaralam city on Tuesday, ANTARA reported. Asnandi of Pagaralam said on Tuesday evening the quake killed Siti Ana (70) of Mentawi village, Lahat district, after her house collapsed. Hundreds of houses in eight villages in Jarai sub-district, about 80 km from Lahat district, and 20 km from Pagaralam city, were damaged by the shocks of the tremor. A school building collapsed in Muara Payang, Lahat district, causing injuries to 30 students. Data collected from some villages, showed that 20 houses in Pejabaran village were heavily and 63 lightly damaged, while 40 houses were lightly damaged and 20 seriously in Pama Salak village. In the meantime, the number of homes damaged by the quake was still being counted.
